If you’re thinking about installing a new shower base, you need to know a few things about the plumbing too. There’s a lot at stake when you’re installing a new shower, so the subfloor needs to be properly constructed and sealed.

Be sure to start off with a solid ¾” plywood base that’s well-supported. If the subfloor is rotted or warped, replace it. It’s not that difficult a job when you’re already in that far. Inspect the plumbing and be sure that the drain is properly supported and doesn’t have some funky extensions running below the subfloor. If it does, you may want to consider replacing that section of plumbing and installing a new section of pipe so that you’re ready to install your shower base and your drain properly.

If you’re planning to do a concrete shower floor, take a look online at some of the new techniques and tools you can use to ensure your sloping is done right the first time. It’s important to create a pre-slope prior to pouring your concrete base. This means laying in a slope that the main concrete base will then sit on and all you’ll need is some tar paper for that to sit on. A good recommendation after the pre-slope is to use a heavy rubber liner over the pre-sloped surface. Be very careful not to puncture the liner as you staple it in, so make your staples at least 12” up the walls. Using some kind of sloping sticks is a good way to ensure you’re properly sloped. Be very careful to make sure the floor slopes from the walls all the way to the drain without any pools or recesses between the drain and the floor.

Getting these basics down will ensure that your shower base will be ready for either tile or stone. A pre-fab shower pan won’t require this much preparation, but your plumbing should be sound prior to using a pre-fab shower pan too.
